The mission of the Neuroscience Program student-run TUNA is to celebrate all things neuroscience. TUNA sponsors social and scientific events on campus and is engaged in outreach activities throughout the New Orleans community.
Activities sponsored by TUNA include Pizza on the Patio social events for Brain Institute faculty and students, Meet-the-Professor lunches for students to engage with Brain Institute faculty one-on-one in an informal setting, and Brain Panel, in which Brain Institute faculty are invited to discuss their research and careers with neuroscience majors.
TUNA members are engaged in numerous outreach activities to bring neuroscience to New Orleans schools and along with Brain Institute faculty are active in Brain Awareness Week activities. In 2016, TUNA sponsored the first Brain Bee competition for high school students, and they have held this competition each spring since then.
TUNA was instrumental in establishing the first Louisiana chapter of the neuroscience honor society, Nu Rho Psi, at Tulane University. In 2013, TUNA was recognized as the Outstanding Student Organization at Tulane.
